Maheno Shipwreck Photograph - Fraser Island

Following the lead of Darren Tierney, I thought I’d post my version of the SS Maheno shipwreck I shot during our trip to Fraser Island.

On the third morning of our camping trip to Fraser Island, Simon, our human alarm clock, woke us up bright and early. Bleary eyed, and definitely not feeling like getting out of my warm sleeping bag, I somehow managed to lift myself up and, through the trees above, take a quick look at the sky outside. It was still dark, but we could see stars in the sky – not a bad sign. We quickly got dressed and woke ourselves up as much as possible, packed our camera gear into the 4×4 and we were off.

The SS Maheno Shipwreck is about 15km south of our camp site, stranded on 75 Mile Beach, and by the time we arrived sunlight was starting to appear over the horizon. Not much later, the clouds were beginning to pink, and the sky turned a nice pastel blue. This is what we came here for.

Each of us found our preferred composition around the ship and we began another long day of shooting.

I thought I’d make a quick post with a new photo before the weekend begins.

This is one of my photographs from my trip down south with Clint – Redgate Beach. Despite what it may look like in the photo, it was windy and cold on this day. I suppose that’s what you get for going down south in the middle of winter, huh?

Make sure you click on it to see it larger.

I’ve also got a pano of this one, but i’ll post it a bit later on.

Hope everyone has a great weekend,

Beau

Photographing Mandurah 08/6

This long weekend found us down at Mandurah, a beach side town about 75km or so south of Perth, Western Australia, for lunch and to visit some friends.

The crew decided to meet at the Brighton Hotel for lunch. We had some time before lunch to have a quick look around the Mandurah foreshore. Mandurah has changed quite a lot since I had been down there last – a few years ago. Emily and I spent a bit of time looking through Christian Fletcher‘s new gallery, which I found quite inspiring.

Anyway, after we’d all finished eating we agreed to meet back at the holiday house, but I noticed some nice clouds forming in the sky as it was getting later into the afternoon. I thought it would be a good idea to head to the beach to take a few photos before meeting back up with everyone else, and it was. As the sun dropped down closer to the horizon, just about everything in the scene began to glow with bright orange and yellow hues. Lately I’ve had a fascination with trying to capture interesting leading lines along the shoreline while shooting beach scenes, and the conditions were perfect for it.

The photo below was shot at 5.05pm – 2 seconds, f/20, ISO 50 – Canon 5D Mk II.

Darren Tierney and I spent most of yesterday driving up and down the Gold Coast and Northern NSW beaches taking photos. We started at Snapper Rocks in the morning, and made our way down to Byron Bay around lunch time. Mid afternoon came around, and so did a storm front; we thought that sunset was going to be pretty average so we headed back to Darren’s place. Looking out the window about 20 minutes before sunset we noticed a huge double rainbow and some nice light forming over the ocean, so we rushed down to the beach, about 500m from his apartment. Sunset was epic.

The shot below was one of the first, taken at Snapper Rocks. I spent a while waiting for the waves to crash against the rocks trying to get the timing right, while speaking to a man by the name of Brad.

I shot a huge amount of frames, and had a lot of fun messing around with the new camera. This was my first shoot with the Canon 5D MkII and I loved it. More images to come!
